✅ The Team:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Database Administrator (DBA) with expertise in SQL Server AND Oracle. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing our database environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and security. This role requires a very proactive individual with great communication skills who can work both independently and collaboratively, with a strong focus on best practices, automation, and continuous improvement.
✅ What this job involves:
1. Database Administration:
· Manage and maintain SQL Server (mainly) and Oracle databases. SQL server 2022,2019,2014, 2008R2; Oracle 18c Enterprise
· Perform database installations, configurations, upgrades, and patch management.
· Implement and enforce database security measures, including user access controls and encryption.
· Develop and maintain database backup and recovery strategies, ensuring data integrity and availability.
· Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimizations to ensure optimal performance and scalability.
2. Performance Tuning and Optimization:
· Conduct regular performance tuning and optimization of SQL queries, indexing, and database structures.
· Analyse and resolve complex database issues, including deadlocks, performance bottlenecks, and replication conflicts.
· Utilize monitoring tools and scripts to proactively identify and address performance issues.
3. Automation and Scripting:
· Develop and maintain scripts for database automation tasks, including backups, monitoring, and maintenance.
· Automate routine database maintenance tasks and deployments to improve efficiency and reduce human error.
· Integrate all monitoring into chosen company centralised monitoring products for Incident Management, providing relevant Standard Operating Procedures for resolution.
4. High Availability and Disaster Recovery:
· Design and implement high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) solutions for SQL Server and Oracle.
· Ensure robust recovery strategies are in place to minimize downtime and data loss.
5. Collaboration and Support:
· Collaborate with application developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to design, deploy, and maintain database solutions that meet business requirements.
· Provide technical guidance to other team members.
· Assist in capacity planning and provide recommendations for hardware and software upgrades.
6. Documentation and Compliance:
· Maintain comprehensive documentation of database configurations, procedures, and best practices.
· Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g. CIS Benchmark Standards), data privacy regulations, and company policies related to data management and security.
· Participate in audits and provide required documentation and evidence for compliance purposes.
✅ What you need to have:
As an Individual:
As well as demonstrate the required skills, first and foremost, you must be a self-starter. You will be expected to be proactive instead of reactive. Leading instead of following.
Situationally driven as well as ticket focused.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field or certifications are a plus.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in database administration, with a strong focus on SQL Server AND Oracle
- Proven experience with database performance tuning, optimization, and troubleshooting in large-scale environments.
- In-depth knowledge of SQL, PL/SQL, T-SQL, and database design principles.
- Hands-on experience with cloud database services such as AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, and Google Cloud SQL are a plus
- Strong understanding of HA and DR solutions, including clustering, replication, and backup/recovery strategies.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, Bash, or Perl for automation tasks.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g. Cassandra, DynamoDB), data warehousing solutions (e.g. Amazon Redshift, Snowflake) and Cloud databases (e.g. AWS RDS) would be advantageous.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools for database automation and CI/CD pipelines.
- Knowledge of data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR) and best practices for data governance.
